The India growth story has finally found takers in the glamorous world of fashion wear and international luxury travel accessories with French fashion and leather goods maker Louis Vuitton deciding to set up its first factory outside Europe in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The new venture, christened as Les Ateliers de Pondicherry Pvt Ltd, is expected to make a range of Louis Vuitton brands which will be marketed locally and abroad. However, the details of the size of investment and the range of products it would manufacture in the new facility were not immediately known.
While FE was not able to reach Louis Vuitton officials for confirmation, a senior official of Feedback Ventures, which was roped in by Louis Vuitton for its India foray, while confirming the development, declined to give further information. ?We can?t give further information at this point of time,? the official said.
According to information available with FE, Louis Vuitton will set up a plant on a 30-acre site at Thondamantham village, near Pondicherry. Spread over 1,30,000 sq-ft area, the facility is expected to go on stream by December next. It will be designed by renowned French architect Jean Marc Sandrolini.
The French fashion giant is expected to assemble its brands of shoes in the new facility initially.
