The world will have to deal with re-elected Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Whether the presidential election in Iran was rigged or not can never be proved either way. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has blessed the result, which means that both the clerical establishment and security forces won?t take up the cudgels for defeated candidate Mir Hossain Mousavi. Instead of being belligerent, it would be wise for the US to open frank dialogue with Iran?s leadership. Threats have been proved futile in the past. US President Barack Obama had sought a one-to-one meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei. Direct meetings among Obama, the Ayatollah and Ahmadinejad may be the best way to halt Iran?s nuclear programme.
