It has long been a notion that for gaming, a wireless mouse is simply out of the question. While the Logitech G7 proved the naysayers wrong somewhat, the Mamba simply rewrites all the rules regarding wireless mice and succeeds.
The majestic packaging of the Mamba proves that it is indeed a unique product and certainly deserves special mention. The glass box reminiscent of a museum display shows the Mamba perched atop of a plastic pedestal certainly looks interesting. Under the mouse is a box storage with tabs to help pull them out. All the accessories, including the obligatory Razer sticker and other pamphlets to the ?Cult of Gamers? certificate is present.
One concern was that our review package received scratches on bottom due to the stand area which could have been reinforced in a better way. The only thing on which Razer skimped out was by not providing a driver CD and hence we had to download the software from the Razer website.
The Mamba shares design similarities with the Deathadder, a large mouse perfect for palm grip gamers. Non slip rubber surface has dominated gaming grade mice lately and Mamba is no exception with palm area and bottom side grips being covered by it. The plastic areas are more susceptible to dust getting stuck to it. The bottom left sports the LED indicator displaying the battery life as well as DPI of the mouse with red and green lighting.
Under the mouse is the battery compartment which is easy to open, wireless connect and cable slider toggles. The docking station doubles as a charger as well as signal receiver. The teflon pads under the Mamba help with smoother movement on most surfaces.
Ergonomics is where the Mamba really shines. It is one of the most comfortable wireless mice that we have tested and best part is that the mouse is suitable even for southpaws. The palm grip will make gaming sessions quite comfortable and less fatigue inducing than the claw grip present in smaller mice like the Logitech G9X. The placement of keys overall is brilliant and will appeal to a majority of the gaming crowd.
One very interesting feature is that the Mamba can also transform into a wired mouse by simply attaching the USB cable to the slot underneath the scroll. The Mamba also contains onboard memory for storing profiles for different button configuration for games or applications. A surprising thing is the 1ms/1000Hz polling rate which basically calculates and sends the position of the mouse to the computer every 1ms.
All said and done, the Mamba will convert the non believers of cordless gaming mice into true believers with its great performance and matching ergonomics. Now if only the price was lesser we would recommend it to everyone but for now only the niche crowd demanding the best can afford it. Just be sure to upgrade to the latest firmware.
