India and Taiwan should jointly work into the emerging areas of chip design, embedded software, multimedia and telecom software, according to Thomas Chang, director of Taipei World Centre’s liaison office in India.
At an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce here Tuesday, Chang said 90 Taiwanese companies were currently operating in India with around $500 million investment made so far. Foxconn, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of computer and mobile accessories, has decided to invest $1.5 billion in the next three years to set up a mobile accessory plant in Tamil Nadu.
ICC senior vice-president Sanjay Budhia said Indian firms would benefit if they explore opportunities for joint ventures, collaborations and technology transfer with Taiwanese companies. A closer relationship with Taiwan would help Indian companies access the Chinese and Hong Kong markets.
Taiwan’s current trade with India, which grew by 65% between October 2006 and September 2007, is worth $ 4 billion.
