India and Indian wind industry will host the Global WindPower conference and exhibition in October 2010. The venue was yet to be decided, Steve Sawyer, secretary general of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), who was in India, said. GWEC is a global forum for the wind energy sector, uniting the wind industry and its representative associations.

With about 50% of India?s installed wind power capacity being in TN, Chennai has all the chances of getting the host city status, DV Giri, chairman of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), said.

Delhi also is in the race. Global WindPower 2008 was held in Beijing. China has the world?s fastest growing wind industry, Sawyer said. ??The very big installation target of 30,000 mw by 2020 and a very clear policy framework have attracted all the leading wind turbine manufacturers and component suppliers to China. Wind power growth is happening in China not in the US or Europe??, he said

India was a market with great potential though the industry growth in the county has been slow. He said by hosting the conference India would be attracting the attention of the investors from across the globe.

??Wind power was one industry that had not been much affected by the credit crisis or recession in Europe and America. It in fact helped companies to clear the backlog of orders and eased prices of inputs like steel??.

Sawyer said the forthcoming Copenhagen conference on climate change should fix emission reduction targets for the world to decarbonise the economy. There should be national programmes which rewards carbon-free electricity generation.

He said GWEC would call for improving the ??Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the international carbon markets. There should be a sectoral credit mechanism to incentives carbon-free power generation. GWEC estimates that with such incentives and the factoring in of the real cost of conventional power generation, wind power would be a competitive and even cheaper source of power??. ??May be the world is moving to an all renewable source of power generation with wind, solar, biomass, big and small hydro and others,?? he said.
