The issue is one of diversity tolerance, on which the US?s advantage looks weaker by the day. It was a shock to learn that Hillary Clinton?s own campaign workers sent out emails to start identity-related whispers against her rival Democrat Barack Obama. She took action against them, but it shows US politics in very poor light.

The dubious conclusion of the Kenyan presidential elections (?World view?, Jan 2) verifies Joseph Stalin?s dictum: ?It?s not the people who vote that count; it?s the people who count the votes.? The Election Commission of Kenya, which ignored undeniable reports of widespread vote rigging, appears to have not only undermined the credibility of the elections but also sabotaged a stable democratic process in one of the most peaceful and prosperous parts of Africa.
