Hungama Mobile, an aggregator, developer and publisher of Indian entertainment content in mobile and digital formats, has joined hands with UK-based Friend Media Technology Systems (FMTS) to curb piracy.

The two companies will provide software solutions with the latest technological innovation, eXpos?. The alliance will offer customised software solutions for the media and entertainment industries that emable them to identify and control the use and misuse of their intellectual properties and brands.

eXpos? leverages unique data analysis algorithms that monitor a vast array of sources on Internet, from peer-to-peer networks to discussion forums and newsgroups. This extensively helps in tracking across the World Wide Web the exact source: be it an individual or a community, from where

intellectual properties and brands are pirated and distributed.

“The Indian film and television industry has been facing a daunting task of curbing piracy and the infringement of intellectual properties as movies, serials and songs are being illegally downloaded through Internet. So there is an urgent need for stronger and foolproof solutions to curb this menace. With the launch of eXpos? software, digital world will have a more vigilant approach towards piracy,” Neeraj Roy, managing director and chief executive officer of Hungama Mobile, said.

“We are confident that more than 50% of the market will be using this service within a year. Hungama will initially cover the music and video segment in the online space and will also target other platforms as it moves ahead. Mobile segment will be the next target,” Roy said.

According to Jonathan Friend, director-engineering of FMTS, Friend Media provides companies with a unique data analysis algorithm solution that monitors a vast array of sources on Internet–from peer-to-peer network to discussion forums and newsgroups.

The solution works at three levels. “Firstly, FMTS provides monitoring services and identifies the seeding point (starting point). Secondly, it removes content from the site and sends infringement notices to the people concerned. Thirdly, it uses the data in a positive way to understand how specific content is accepted,” Friend said.

The Indian entertainment and media industry, currently estimated at Rs 43,700 crore, is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% over the next five years.
