Following the serial blasts in the capital last week, a wary Delhi government is endeavouring to go hi-tech and implement a foolproof security system for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. ?Under the new regime, a strong vigil will be kept on sensitive spots through satellite and Entry to games village and sports venues will be strictly through electronic I-cards. All roads and crossing leading to sports complexes will be kept under electronic surveillance,? Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit told FE.

As per the plan, a ?Games Village management and Crowd management system? will be in place ahead of the Games. A hi-tech traffic management Centre will be a part of the programme wherein, a fleet of helicopters will monitor the traffic movement during the mega event spanning October 3 to 14, 2010.

?To control the flow of visitors, a crowd management system will be in place. Electronic Ticketing system network will link the metro stations, bus stands and select taxi stands. The government has already placed orders to foreign suppliers for latest surveillance mobile cameras,? Dikshit said.

?More than a 1000-strong workforce is busy in developing the whole system. All state government departments are being linked through Wide Area Network (WAN). Some of the strategic spots will become Wi-fi zones. About 10 kilometers area around Commonwealth Games village will be covered under Wi-Fi system. To provide internet facility to visitors, about 500 cyber cafes will be set up,? Dikshit added.

The government will soon invite bids from reputed IT firms to showcase sports, cultural activities, shopping and tourist spots and health facilities. The information will be given through big display boards.

The whole idea is to instill a sense of security to Delhiites and visitors who have been left insecure and angry at all those who are responsible for their security following two major terror attacks in less than three years.

About 20 call centers will be set up in Gurgaon and Noida. These centres will be used to provide information about tourism, sports, ticketing and health related information. To provide latest information, more than 2000 information kiosks will also be set up.

A portal is being prepared by which information will be received by a click of a mouse.

Besides this, the government will launch a forceful campaign against terror to ensure the prevention of occurrences of terrorist activities. It has been decided to achieve this objective through public participation.
