Haryana has proposed to set up another thermal power station at Jhajjar under theCentre’s tariff policy. The Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (HPGCL) under case-II of this tariff policy, has proposed a plant of 1,150+15% mw. It would be set up by independent power producer (IPP) through tariff- based competitive bidding. The state has an existing installed capacity of about 4,072 mw of which 1, 587.4 mw is generated at Faridabad, Yamuna Nagar and Panipat.

RK Sharma, project director, HPGCL told FE, “Under this tariff policy, we will provide land, coal, water linkages and the basic infrastructure to the company. The company will generate electricity and sell it to us at a fixed price. We have issued tenders for selecting the IPP and all the major players like Reliance, Tata, Jindal etc had evinced interest. Of them we have short listed 11 companies and the project will be allotted by the year-end. The taget for commissioning the project is 36 months. This would generate additional 288 lakh units of electricity per day.”

The corporation is also in the process of procuring about 2,000 mw power from the projects to be set up by the IPP under case-I of government of India tariff policy. Sharma further added, “Though no assistance is provided by the state to the power producers, the project can be set up anywhere in India. Considering long term procurement plans, we have signed various power purchase agreements as well. Besides this, we are also proposing to set up another 300 mw unit at Yamuna nagar, Jhajjar and Hisar, which would be commissioned by November 2007, December 2009 and August 2010.”
