For beer lovers, Hyderabad is perhaps not the right place, right now. Reason: there is shortage of beer in the city.
As demand for the tipple touches a high in Hyderabad, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to give temporary permission to breweries in the state to run a third shift till June 30. According to sources in the liquor industry, demand for beer has increased by over 20% as compared to last summer. ?As the temperature is increasing, the beer consumption is zooming,? a liquor dealer told FE. As per rough estimates, over 30,000 litres a day are being consumed in Hyderabad on a normal day, sources added. However, due to summer, the demand has peaked at 50,000 litres. Accordingly, the state government also has issued orders allowing five breweries ? Skol Breweries, Crown Beer India, Asia Pacific Breweries, United Millennium Breweries, Arthos Breweries ? to run a third shift under AP Breweries Act.
There are about 350 liquor shops in Hyderabad. On an average, each shop sells about 10 cases per day during normal periods, a liquor merchant said. However, due to the mounting demand, the shops are placing more order to AP Beverages Corporation, which has to maintain the stocks. Industry sources blame the beverages corporation for the poor maintenance of stocks.
They have to properly forecast the demand and place orders with the breweries. But it appears that they have failed in their task, says industry sources. To bridge the demand-supply gap, breweries may take at least three-weeks to make beer, sources added.
