With the first three weeks of October failing to generate substantial business, film exhibitors are a wary lot.
The October-December period normally generates the maximum revenues for exhibitors, being the festive season.
The other busy period for them is April-June, given that the examination season gets over and summer vacation begins. During April-May this year, exhibitors already faced a lean period as all the limelight was swept away by the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Given the choppy market conditions, and many films being declared ?disasters? at the box office, exhibitors are not sure of their revenues this season.
Bhumika Tewari, AVP programming, Fun Cinemas, said, ?At least 60-70% of the revenues are raked in from these quarters of the year.? On October 2, two films, Drona and Kidnap, hit the box-office. Although Drona received 50% opening, it later nosedived. The Box Office India report has declared it as a ?disaster?.
The report reveals Drona crashed with Rs 50 lakh business in week two and is unlikely to touch the Rs 11 crore net mark. This, it says, is a bigger debacle than legendary failures like Deedar-E-Yaar , Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and RGV Ki Aag
Tewari added, ?Last week, we had a good opening at the box office with Hello .
This week too, we are expecting a good opening weekend with Karzzzz .? But the box office report suggests, collection of Karzzzz shocked all with a poor opening with multiplexes being 30-40%, some single screens in Gujarat, UP, Bihar and Rajasthan opened well at 80% plus, but single screens in Punjab and Delhi were poor at 40%.
Overall, the reports are not good and if the film does not improve at the multiplexes, it would prove to be yet another debacle after Drona .
Hello managed fair business in week one of around Rs 9 crore nett.
Kidnap managed just Rs 3.75 crore in week two and the outside chance it had of recovery is gone. The two week total is around Rs 23.50 crore nett.
A Wednesday remains the bright spot at the box office with rock steady business. The film has grossed Rs 11.25 crore nett in six weeks and is advancing towards 50 days.
However, Devang Sampat, senior vice-president, Cinemax, said, ?Going forward, movies like Roadside Romeo, Heroes and Golmaal Returns are expected to generate good business.
Then, in November, there are films like Dostana, Yuvraaj, and there is a James Bond movie, which are expected to do well.?
