On the sidelines of the 9th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, PM Manmohan Singh outlined an optimistic growth projection for this year. Singh mentioned that despite the uncertain global economic scenario, India?s recovery is ?progressing well.? He said, ?In the last two quarters, India?s growth rate has been 8.9% and we expect that for the entire year, it will be around 8.5%. We expect that from the next year, we will be able to grow at 9-10%.? Singh termed this as vital for social development programmes.

Although the PM did not directly touch upon the issue of corruption which has kicked up a storm in the country, he did express the need for the government to make systemic changes that ensure transparency in procedures for safeguarding governance processes. ?I believe our democracy is sturdy, vibrant and has its own inbuilt mechanisms for redressal and course correction. We need to build consensus on far-reaching changes that may be required in processes of governance and in our legal or electoral systems. We are determined to work sincerely towards this end.?
