A team of Rajkot and Sabarkantha police has started digging parts of jungles in the district in search of remains of a youth from Rajkot, who was allegedly killed a year ago. The case has been reopened after the deceased?s wife filed a habeas corpus in the High Court that ordered the Rajkot police to produce the youth.

The police on Thursday arrested one Nayan Upadhyay alias Maharaj from Pethapur near Gandhinagar. The police said Upadhyay has confessed to have killed Rahul Patel (30) and buried his body somewhere in Sabarkantha.

They said preliminary investigations revealed that a group led by Upadhyay had claimed to have a pair of ?see-through glasses? that could spot buried treasures. The police added that Rahul had fixed a deal to sell it for a whopping Rs 700 crore to an unidentified buyer from Bangalore. They later took Rs 7 lakh from Rahul and allegedly killed him on June 12, 2009, as there was no such glass.

On November 27, Rahul?s wife, Shilpa Ladani, filed a complaint of abduction against Chaggan Kumbhar, a resident of Amreli; Yashwant Shah, a resident of Ahmedabad; and Nayan Upadhyay, a resident of Pethapur, with the Kotda Sangani police station. When questioned, Kumbhar and one Himmatsinh Vaghela, who owned the farmhouse where Rahul was allegedly kept, told the police that they had last seen Rahul with Upadhyay.

But the police failed to make much progress after which Shilpa moved the High Court.
