A woman constable travelling from Ranchi to Garhwa in Palamu with the body of a relative was allegedly waylaid by highway robbers and raped by up to six men near Latehar town Wednesday night.
The alleged incident happened on NH-75. The constable, who is in her late 20s, was travelling with relatives, including her parents. They were carrying the body of her brother-in-law to their village in Garhwa?s Bhandaria.
Posted at the Latehar Police Lines, the woman was given the job in early 2012 after her husband, a constable, died in the Maoist attack on MP Inder Singh Namdhari?s convoy. The couple have two children.
Five people have been detained. The woman did not report the alleged rape at first. Some truck drivers who had also been targeted by the robbers and claimed to have seen her being dragged away first came forward to testify.
?A police party searched the area. They found a woman?s photo in uniform as well as a gold chain,? said Additional Director General of Police S N Pradhan.
