The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) and the Chandigarh administration in a collective effort to uplift the standard and quality of living of the economically weaker sections and the middle class have decided to construct dwelling units in various sectors of the city.

The administration is concerned about the need for more housing facilities for middle-income group and lower income group, keeping in view the development of the city and growing population. The Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park, Sarangpur Institutional Area and other such projects would necessitate housing requirements, which are being fulfilled through these initiatives.

The region has been facing shortage of houses for lower income group primarily in the category of one and two bedroom flats. In the education city, houses are being constructed for the families of staff members and other employees. In the IT Park, direct employment is providing 3 indirect jobs, thus increasing the housing demand. A support system will be developed to meet this demand. In this effort, the administration has decided to increase the number of houses in order to augment the comfort of this section of the society.

Under the plan, CHB will construct around 2200 dwelling units of different categories in Sector 63 over an area of 42 acres. The construction process for the same will soon be started.

In addition to these, more than 4500 dwelling units will be constructed in Sector 53, 54 and 55 in an area of 90 acres.

In addition to about 13,000 dwelling units for different categories including the economical weaker sections coming up, the administration is also planning to develop a number of housing complexes primarily at Integrated General Housing Complex over 20 acres of land at Kishangarh, housing complex for economically weaker section over 10 acres of land at Kishangarh, Integrated General Housing Complex over 30 acres of land at Sarangpur and integrated low cost housing project over 25 acre of land at Hallomajra.

As Hallomajra is surrounded by the industrial area and with the perpetual increase in economic development, employment rate has increased, which in response adds to the housing shortage. Thus, this plan by the administration will counter the current and future shortage of houses

General Housing Scheme at Maloya-I, covering 33.51 acre, Maloya-II upon 10.38 acre and Dhanas on 32.4 acre will also enable CHB to construct dwelling units of different categories for general public.

The CHB has also been asked to ensure all infrastructure related facilities such as shopping, school, health care, parks etc. CHB is further in the process of implementing new construction concepts in its upcoming housing complexes like rainwater harvesting, energy efficient lighting system and use of alternate sources of energy to minimise load.
