Cambridge University will soon have a Chair on Indian business & enterprise, which would be fully funded by the Indian government. This will be for the first time that an educational institution outside the country will be funded entirely by the Indian government.

The institution would be named Jawaharlal Nehru Professorship of Indian Business & Enterprise and The Cambridge Centre for Indian Business. ?Till date no institution abroad has been established by total central government funding,?a government official told FE.

The institution shows the growing reputation of India across the globe. With Indian economy growing at 9% and Indian story well and truly began, the world is keen to know about Indian Business and environment Indian entrepreneurs works in.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Professorship of Indian Business & Enterprise and The Cambridge Centre for Indian Business would provide that very knowledge to scholars across the world, said the official.

The Indian clout has increased so much that most of top universities of the world are vying to open their branches in the country. But, they have been unable to execute their plan as the India government is still considering the Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operation, Maintenance of Quality and Prevention of Commercialisation) Bill, which will allow foreign universities to set up campus in the country and invest in Indian universities.

As a result of the protest from Left parties and teachers lobbies, the government has not been able to muster the courage to introduce the Bill in Parliament. Despite being listed during the Budget, the Left has not allowed the Bill be to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha as a part of its opposition to the entry for foreign universities.

As per the Bill under no circumstances any university would be allowed to open franchise university in the country and profits cannot be repatriated. Also, all the foreign universities would be given the deemed university status and would have to get clearance from their country about credentials.
