It is always a huge relief once the Budget period is over. For weeks together, the whole country?at least as reflected in mass media?behaves like it is possessed of spirits from some strange world of taxes and deficits. To some of us, it is like being thrown in Alice?s Wonderland, with talking heads spouting numerals and data all around the table, and with cards flying in all directions. Now that it is all done and over, sanity should return. The Cheshire cat will still have its broad grin, of course.

Can?t beat us?

Your editorial on advertising (?Secret of success?, February 28) suggests that ad professionals are in the business of massaging the egos of clients. This is patently absurd, as anyone who has worked in an ad agency can substantiate. Ad professionals are professionals, first and foremost, and they are in the business of massaging the egos of customers. Is media feeling a trifle guilty that it, too, has blurred this line and is now in more or less the same business of shamelessly pandering to customers?

Call the Left?s bluff

The President, in her address to the joint session of Parliament, expressed hope that the Indo-US nuclear deal would still be possible to clinch. However, in the face of fierce opposition by the Left, the deal is now as dead as a dodo. To save the deal, the Congress should call the Left?s bluff. A courageous stand would enhance the UPA?s prestige among the people, and pay rich dividends at the hustings.
