West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee?s confession (?Not just Nandigram?, Dec 6) that Nandigram was an ?administrative and political failure? is a bold statement, and it should be welcome. His candour sends positive signals all across the state. Now, he should promise the people of West Bengal that his government would undertake any project only after taking them into confidence. And above all, he should take urgent steps to bring to book all the culprits involved in the atrocities against innocent people in Nandigram.

Let?s wake up

Nirvikar Singh has provocatively suggested (?Rule and reform: China vs India?, Dec 6) that the Chinese might actually be ahead of Indians on idea generation, despite all assumptions to the contrary we make on the basis of our ?democracy?. It is time we started seeing through Western appellations, and taking cognisance of others? progress.

Be inclusive

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has rightly said in her election speeches in Gujarat that the state?s progress report shows the vikas (development) of only four people. I hope Ms Gandhi will do something. If there are four people in Gujarat who have progressed, for the whole country the figure is only 24. These are people who need not even pay income tax. I hope we can remedy this.
