On June 23, several students who had given the entrance examination to study BEd at Delhi University (DU) received an email, informing them that they had cleared the examination.
The email also asked them to submit personal data such as address, phone number etc. The next day, when they checked the results on the DU website, they were unable to find their names.
By the evening of June 24, the website of DU?s Central Institute of Education (CIE) had put up a notice stating that ?no information had been sent out to anybody via email? and the university was not responsible for the emails received by the students.
A police complaint has now been filed by the parent of a student, who received the email, seeking a probe into the ?leak of personal data? under the Information Technology Act and for forgery.
The complaint, which has been sent to the police commissioner and the DCP concerned, also alleges that apart from the ?forgers? who sent the fake email, CIE officials could also be involved in the ?fraud?.
?The act could not have been committed by the accused without the connivance of officials of the department and obtaining the data of students like their email Ids…,? the complaint states.
Advocate Anil Soni, who has filed the complaint, said he had been contacted by dozens of parents whose children received the email. ?I have filed a compliant seeking an FIR under 66A, 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act and 465, 469, 120B of IPC,? Soni said.
?This is a fraud committed on the students. The details that were sent are sensitive personal data. We have approached police, we hope something will be done,? Soni said.
