Amid the economic slowdown and various bureaucratic hurdles, Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) has firmed up its plan to come up with an aerotropolis project on 2,700 acre in Ludhiana.

The project will include an international airport and a modern township with housing on 500 acres. Besides, it also plans to build commercial institutions and recreational infrastructure on 320 acre. The company has already signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with Punjab for setting up an Aerotropolis project in Ludhiana.

IMRB International has carried out a detailed study on the need and potential for an international airport in Ludhiana. The study has revealed that the overall outlook for air travel in the Ludhiana region is very positive. It showed that 1.46 million air passengers travelled to or from Ludhiana in 2007-2008.

BAPL director, Raj Shekhar Agrawal who was in Chandigarh told FE, ?The study has said that there is a very high passenger potential for both the domestic and international routes. The domestic potential is 3, 75,500 passengers. About 95% of the projected traffic is for Delhi and Mumbai?he said

?The international potential is almost three times that of the domestic potential as it would attract 1,089,000 passengers. The demand is mostly for major international destinations like UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore,? he added.
