After a long wait, the MG Comet EV finally makes its debut in India. Although a small car, the MG Comet EV offers a spacious interior, and with its introductory price tag of Rs 7.98 lakh ex-showroom, the Comet is now the most affordable EV in the country, undercutting the Tata Tiago EV as well.
MG India will commence bookings for the Comet EV on May 15, followed by deliveries in the same month, in select cities.
The MG Comet EV sports a quirky, boxy design with small wheels, a large windscreen, and rectangular windows. The two-door four-seater is based on the GSEV platform, a dedicated platform for electric cars. Further, the Comet’s battery pack is situated on the floor of the car to give it a better centre of gravity.
Speaking of the battery, the Comet features a 17.3kWh battery pack that offers a range of 230km, adequate for the intended use. MG says that the company is looking at urban commuters only, and not those looking for a compact car that can do long journeys. A single motor powers the rear wheels of the Comet and the EV gets three drive modes and three KERS modes.
Inside, the MG Comet has four seats and features two 10.25-inch displays for the infotainment system and instrument console. The Comet gets smartphone connectivity, over 100 voice commands, connected car tech, and even allows the user to use their mobile phones as the car key.
On the safety front, MG says that the Comet has undergone stringent testing, specifically for India. The EV gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, three-point seatbelts for all four passengers, a reverse parking camera, a TPMS, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
