The SUV market has been booming in India for the last few years. What was once an aspirational segment is now the most sought-after segment in the passenger vehicle market. This is courtesy of the creation of multiple sub-segments within the SUV category.
The sub-4 metre segment of SUVs features a plethora of models to choose from. A total of 1,06,634 units of subcompact SUVs were sold in September this year which resulted in YoY and MoM growths of 23.16% and 8.66%, respectively. Let us take a look at the top 5 best-selling SUVs from the sub4 metre category for September.

- Tata Nexon
Tata Motors sold the highest number of sub-4 metre SUVs in September in the form of Nexon. The crossover recorded a total monthly volume of 15,325 units which translated to a YoY growth of 5.56% and an MoM growth of over 90%. Nexon recently received a comprehensive facelift last month alongside its all-electric sibling.
- Maruti Suzuki Brezza
Nexon was closely followed by Maruti Suzuki Brezza which raked up 15,001 units in September this year resulting in a marginal YoY decline and MoM growth of 2.87% and 2.94%, respectively. Brezza witnessed a massive upgrade last year which led to its new design and a lot more features added to its equipment.
- Tata Punch
Another Tata model in this list, the Punch takes the third place with a recorded volume of 13,036 units in September leading to a YoY growth of 6.41%. However, MoM sales declined by 10 percent with Tata selling 14,523 units of Punch in August this year. Punch is one of the safest cars in India after it was awarded a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP last year.
- Hyundai Venue
Hyundai dispatched 12,204 units of Venue in September 2023, thus, resulting in YoY and MoM growths of 10.61% and 11.47%, respectively. The Korean automaker recently added a partial ADAS package to the Venue which makes it the most affordable car in India to offer ADAS functionalities.
- Maruti Suzuki Fronx
Fronx is the second Maruti Suzuki model to feature in this short list after Brezza. The Indo-Japanese carmaker sold 11,455 units of Fronx across the country in September which led to a marginal 5.83 percent MoM decline. The Fronx gets the same underpinnings as the new Baleno, a new set of equipment, and a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine for additional performance.
