Years back, when Global NCAP started the ‘Safer Cars for India’ program, not many cars were able to secure good safety ratings. Some were proven to be so bad that they were asked to be taken off the roads. However, fast forward to 2023, there are numerous 5-star safety-rated cars. 

Let’s take a look at eleven 5-star safety-rated cars in India currently on sale that cost under Rs 20 lakh ex-showroom.

Tata Punch

The most affordable 5-star safety-rated car on sale in India currently is the Tata Punch, with a price tag of Rs 5.99 lakh ex-showroom. The Tata Punch has earned 5 stars for adult safety and 4 stars for child protection. 

Tata Altroz

Next on the list is another Tata, the Altroz this time. Available in petrol, diesel, and CNG options, the Altroz is priced at Rs 6.59 lakh onwards and is the only hatchback on the list. The Altroz gets 5 stars for adult protection and 3 stars for child safety. 

Mahindra XUV300

The launch of the Mahindra XUV300 was a game changer for the carmaker as it is one of Mahindra’s best-selling vehicles in India, priced at Rs 7.99 lakh onwards. In its crash tests, Global NCAP has awarded the XUV300 5 stars for adult safety and 4 stars for child protection. 

Tata Nexon

It’s another Tata again, and this time the carmaker’s best-seller, the Nexon. Priced at Rs 8.09 lakh onwards, the Nexon is available in petrol, diesel, and all-electric formats, while also seeing a major update a few weeks ago. The Nexon continues to retain its 5-star rating for adult protection and 3-star rating for child occupancy. 

Volkswagen Virtus/Skoda Slavia

Volkswagen and Skoda revamped their offerings in India with new launches and amongst them were the Virtus and Slavia sedans. The Skoda SLavia is the more affordable of the two, priced at Rs 10.89 lakh onwards and both cars have secured full points for adult safety and child protection. 

Volkswagen Taigin/Skoda Kushaq

The Taigun and Kushaq are again new products, and similar to the Virtus/Slavia, the Kushaq is the more affordable one with prices starting at Rs 10.89 lakh ex-showroom. And the two SUVs, similar to the sedans, have secured five stars for adult and child occupancy. 

Hyundai Verna

Hyundai has upped its safety focus on cars and the Verna was the first to secure full marks for safety. The Hyundai Verna scored 5 stars for adult and child occupancy and Hyundai is focusing on getting more of its cars 5-star rated. The new Hyundai Verna carries a price tag of Rs 10.96 lakh onwards. 

Mahindra Scorpio-N

The Mahindra Scorpio-N was a big step up for the carmaker as the iconic badge carries a lot of heritage for Mahindra and with the launch of the Scorpio-N, the carmaker has managed to tick all the boxes, including safety. Priced at Rs 13.26 lakh onwards, the Scorpio-N is rated 5 stars for adult protection and 3 stars for child safety. 

Mahindra XUV700

Like the Scorpio-N, the XUV700 was a huge launch for Mahindra, as it had several new features, including ADAS tech, a feature found for the first time in this segment. Priced at Rs 14.02 lakh onwards, the XUV700 gets 5 stars for adult safety and 4 stars for child protection. 

Tata Harrier

Following the successful launch of the Nexon facelift, Tata launched the Harrier facelift at Rs 15.49 lakh and alongside the launch, Tata also highlighted the safety aspects of the vehicle, which has undergone frontal, side, and side pole crash tests. The Harrier managed to secure full points for adult and child safety. 

Tata Safari

Alongside the Harrier, Tata also launched the updated Safari at Rs 16.19 lakh, which gets a host of new features and a design update. Similar to the Harrier, the Safari has also secured a 5-star rating for adult and child protection.
