Sedans were once the most desirable body style in the Indian market but they have been overshadowed by SUVs over the past few years. As a result, the number of options in the sedan segment have diminished significantly in recent years. Out of the all sedans currently on sale in the market, the top 10 sedans contributed a volume of 31,222 units in September.
Top 10 sedans in September 2023: Dzire, Aura hold top spots
The YoY numbers remained stagnant whereas MoM figures witnessed a slight drop. Maruti Dzire was the best-selling sedan last month with a total volume of 13,880 units dispatched to dealerships across the country. Sales for the subcompact sedan grew by 44.57% YoY while MoM increased by 4.42%.

Dzire was followed by its immediate rival– Hyundai Aura with a monthly volume of 3,900, almost 10,000 units less than the former. Sales of the Korean subcompact sedan declined by 8% YoY whereas MoM figures decreased by 20.28%.
The third spot was taken by Hyundai Verna, with a recorded monthly volume of 2,610 units translating to a 57.80% YoY growth, although MoM growth was marginal. Verna received a generation upgrade earlier this year which involved comprehensive design, feature and mechanical upgrades over its predecessor.
Top 10 sedans in September 2023: Amaze, Virtus, City sales decline
Most sedans faced a decline in sales with models like Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Virtus and Honda City registering negative growths. All three sedans registered YoY declines of 37%, 10% and 53%, respectively. While Honda sold 2,577 units of Amaze, the Japanese auto brand sold 1,599 units of City last month. On the other hand, Volkswagen sold 1,791 units of Virtus last month, thus occupying the fifth spot.
Virtus’ Czech cousin– Skoda Slavia registered a monthly volume of 1,581 units in September this year thus resulting in a healthy YoY growth of 68.35%. Although, the compact sedan witnessed a marginal MoM decline of 4.59%.
Top 10 sedans in September 2023: Tigor, Ciaz, Camry
With 1,491 units sold in September this year, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is currently in 9th position and it registered 9.71% YoY growth and 75.62% MoM growth. The list was rounded off by Toyota Camry with 259 units sold last month resulting in a 281% YoY growth and 43% MoM growth.
