The last month of 2023 evidently witnessed plenty of action in the Indian automotive industry. OEMs lured customers to their showrooms with attractive discounts which helped clear the inventory and boom up the monthly sales as well. Especially in the passenger vehicle (PV) space, a total of 2,987,204 units were sold in December.
This led to a YoY growth of 4.4%. Interestingly, the PV segment registered a MoM decline of 14%. Let us look at the top 10 cars sold in the country in December 2023.

Top 10 cars in December 2023: Nexon takes spot
The top spot was taken by Tata Nexon with a total volume of 15,284 units sold in December. The subcompact SUV registered a healthy YoY growth of 27% with 12,053 units sold during the same period last year. It was trailed by Maruti Dzire which also recorded an impressive 17% YoY growth.
The subcompact sedan managed to record a monthly volume of 14,012 units as opposed to 11,997 units sold during the same period last year. The third spot was taken by Tata Punch with 13,787 units dispatched across the country. The micro SUV registered a significant YoY growth of 30%.
Top 10 cars in December 2023: Ertiga, Brezza gain volume
Ertiga grabbed the fourth spot with a total of 12,975 units sold in December 2023. The MPV recorded a YoY growth of 6%. It was followed by Maruti Brezza which registered a monthly volume of 12,844 units in December. During the same period last year, the subcompact SUV registered a sales volume of Rs 11,200 units which led to a 15% YoY growth.
The sixth place was occupied by Maruti Swift with a registered volume of 11,843 units which resulted in a minor YoY decline of 2%. Swift has been among the highest sellers for the Indo-Japanese carmaker but off late its number has reduced. This is probably because a new-gen model of Swift is around the corners.
Top 10 cars in December 2023: Scorpio records highest growth
Mahindra entered the list of 10 best-sellings cars list in December with the Scorpio range, including the old Scorpio Classic and the new Scorpio N, registering a volume of 11,355 units in December. The boxy mid-size SUV recorded the highest YoY growth of 62% among the top 10 selling cars last month. During the same period last year, the Scorpio range recorded a volume of 7,003 units.
The rest of the list was completed by Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Venue, and Maruti Eeco, with sales volume of 10,669 units, 10,383 units, and 10,034 units, respectively. Among these, Baleno recorded the highest YoY decline of 37%. On the other hand, sales of Venue increased by 25%. Eeco registered a YoY drop of 5%.
