Tata Punch is a raging success in the Indian passenger vehicle market and consistently being one of the top-selling cars on a monthly basis ever since it was launched in 2021. In fact, Punch was the first-ever SUV in India to record the highest monthly sales volume in the passenger vehicle category.
Now, the homegrown carmaker has announced that Punch has generated a sales volume of 4 lakh units ever since it was first launched in October 2021. This monumental figure was achieved in just 34 months. It achieved the first 1 million unit sales in August 2022, in a span of just 10 months within its market launch.
Speaking on this accomplishment, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “Tata Motors has always been known for its deep understanding of the Indian consumer. This attribute enables us to create disruptive yet highly functional products.With the Punch, we not only introduced the Indian market to a new sub-segment but also successfully democratised the SUV attributes by offering a comprehensive package in a compact footprint.”
Why Tata Punch is favoured by Indian buyers?
In fact, in the first 6 months of CY 2024, Punch has generated a cumulative volume of 1,10,308 units, a 64% increase from the corresponding period in the previous year. There are multiple reasons why Punch is such a favourite among Indian car buyers. For starters, it is one of the smallest SUVs in the market, which also makes it one of the most affordable SUVs to buy in the country.
Another big reason for the micro SUV’s success is its availability in multiple powertrains— petrol, CNG, and fully-electric. Tata Motors added the Punch EV to the lineup earlier in January this year. Punch is also very well kitted for its segment with decent space making it a very practical option for buyers to consider.

The Punch’s dominance in the compact SUV segment is underscored by its impressive 17.7% market share. Moreover, it has emerged as the best-selling vehicle across all segments in the current financial year (YTD FY25). The Punch’s sales have witnessed a remarkable 27% year-on-year growth in FY24, solidifying its position as the top-selling SUV from January 2024 to June 2024.
A breakdown of its sales reveals that the petrol variant accounts for 53% of total Punch sales, followed by the CNG variant at 33%, and the EV variant at 14% (CY24). This demonstrates Punch’s broad appeal and versatility in meeting diverse customer preferences.
