Maruti Suzuki has announced its sales figure for December 2023 as well as its annual sales figure. The largest carmaker in India recorded a 1.28% decline with overall sales recorded at 1,37,551 units last month, inclusive of domestic sales and exports of passenger vehicles (PVs), light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and supply to other OEM.
Maruti Suzuki reports 6.45% YoY decline
The Indo-Japanese carmaker recorded a monthly sales volume of 104,778 passengers vehicles in December which led to a 6.45% YoY decline. During the same period last year, Maruti recorded a monthly sales volume of 1,12,010 units. The company also shipped 1,714 units of its LCV– Super Carry– across the country in December 2023.

Total domestic sales stood at 110,667 units last month which resulted in a 5.85% YoY decline. This included 4,175 units shipped to other OEMs. For the uninitiated, Maruti manufactures rebranded models like Glanza, and Rumion for Toyota Maruti shipped a total of 26,884 units to the overseas market, which marked a 23% YoY increase.
In December 2023, Maruti sold 45,957 units of its utility vehicles including Brezza, Fronx, Etiga, Grand Vitara, Jimny, etc. During the same period last year, this figure stood at 33,008 units. At this point of time, Maruti is the highest UV manufacturer in India. The Mini and Compact segment cumulatively accounted for 48,298 units last month.

Speaking to the media on the sales figures, Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer, Sales & Marketing- MSIL, stated “See growth to be muted in 2024 on high base going forward this year, though volumes might be large”. He further stated that SUV segment will continue to surge and demand may plateau around 54-55 percent level.
Last month, Maruti offered hefty discounts on the Jimny by introducing a new special Thunder Edition. Customers were of the opinion that the company had reduced prices for the compact off-roader. Now, the carmaker has come out with an official statement regarding prices for Jimny.
Srivastava said that there has been no change in prices of Jimny and the Thunder Edition was a limited offer. He further pointed out that higher discounts were available across all OEMs. The discounted price helped Maruti clear its inventory of Jimny. Maruti claims to have sold 4,500 units of the lifestyle SUV. Srivastava went on to reveal that going forward, high discounts will make way for low discounts.
Total passenger vehicle sales from Maruti Suzuki in the domestic market for CY2023 stood at 1,707,668 units. Whereas a total of 269,046 units were shipped to overseas markets during the entire 2023. During this period, the carmaker manufactured 54,493 units for other OEMs. For the ongoing financial year, total domestic sales figure stands at 1,280,090 units as opposed to 1,179,292 units registered during the corresponding period in the previous fiscal, resulting in a 8.54% growth.
