Triumph took a big step when it decided to collaborate with Bajaj Auto for developing an affordable, India-centric platform which gave birth to the 400cc range of motorcycles which currently comprises Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, and the recently launched Speed T4. The British bikemaker is now preparing to add a fourth model to this range.

A faired cafe racer was spotted testing in India for the first time which was seen carrying the same engine casing as other Triumph 400. There have been murmurs of Triumph bringing a 400cc Thruxton to India. The Thruxton is the brand’s global range of cafe racers. This model has been spied testing on foreign soil on multiple occasions in recent months.

Triumph Thruxton 400: Styling

The fact that it has now been spotted testing in India, reaffirms that it has high chances of hitting the roads here in the future. As for the test mule, it derives its styling majorly from the flagship Thruxton 1200, especially the front end with a fighterjet-inspired faired body adding visual mass to its design.

Like a typical cafe racer, the clip-on handlebar is set very low and foot pegs positoned slightly rear, in order to lend a very sporty and committed riding posture. Rest of the visual elements such as the teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a single-piece seat with ribbed pattern, an upswept exhaust, taillamp assembly, and a single-piece pillion grab rail have been borrowed from the Speed 400.

Triumph Thruxton 400: Expected specs

As expected, underpinnings are likely to be borrowed from the Speed 400. These include a black-coloured upside down front fork, a rear monoshock, and single disc brakes at both ends aided by dual-channel ABS. By the looks of it, the Thruxton 400 rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels which were wrapped with Pirelli Rosso tyres in the international test mule. The India-spec model is likely to be shod with locally-sourced MRF or Apollo tyres.

Powering the Thruxton 400 will be the same 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine which churns out 39.5 bhp at 8,000rpm and a peak torque of 37.5 Nm at 6,500rpm in the Speed 400. However, we expect Triumph and Bajaj to tweak the tuning of this engine to suit the purpose of the Thruxton. This motor will be paired with a 6-speed gearbox via a slip and assist clutch.

Triumph Thruxton 400: Expected price & launch

At present,  Triumph offers the Speed 400 retails at Rs 2.40 lakh while the Scrambler 400X is priced at Rs 2.65 lakh (both ex-showroom). We expect the upcoming Thruxton 400 to sit on top of the 400cc range and expected to cost around Rs 2.80 (ex-showroom). It is expected to break cover sometime in the second half of 2025. Upon launch, it will not have any direct rival in this segment.
