Tata Motors has taken the wraps off the first car from the performance-oriented sub-brand TAMO, the Racemo Sports Coupe. The car has a sub-four metre length at 3,835 mm and is a two-seater coupe. The car has a rear-mounted mid-engine layout, which is in line with sportscars globally. The car was unveiled by Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD, Tata Motors at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The production version of the Racemo will be launched in India in early 2018.

The Racemo Sports Coupe is powered by a 1.2 litre turbocharged Revotron petrol aluminium engine that develops a healthy 186 hp and 210 Nm of torque. The transmission choice is a little baffling though as the company has gone in for a six-speed AMT unit with paddle-shifters. AMT units are generally slow in mass-market cars but can be fast as well in applications such as Formula 1 so it’ll be interesting to see how Tata engineers have calibrated the gearbox.
The car’s body is made out of Tata’s MOFlex multi-material sandwich structure, which is structural technology that enables greater freedom in surface design, efficient large-scale part integration leading to modularity and faster time to market
The Racemo strategy will be based on four key pillars, which include the Racemo regular road car, a more powerful track variant called the Racemo+, a virtual version that’ll be introduced in Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 3 game and a digital reality experiential approach to provide people with a virtual experience of the car. The Racemo will also be the first first Indian car to make it to the Forza gaming series.
