CNG vehicles are slowly gaining popularity in India, and after Tata Motors introduced CNG versions of its models without compromising comfort and convenience features, other carmakers also joining in. The latest in the list is the Hyundai Exter CNG, which competes directly with the Tata Punch CNG.

The Tata Punch was the best-selling vehicle in India in June 2024, while it has been at the top of the charts previously as well. This is primarily owing to the choice of powertrains — petrol, CNG, and all-electric. The Hyundai Exter on the other hand, is not the best-seller for the carmaker, however, it is one of the best-sellers, and the introduction of CNG will widen its customer base. In terms of dimensions, the Tata Punch CNG is slightly longer and wider with more ground clearance compared to the Exter, although they compete in the same segment. That said, the Hyundai Exter CNG offers more headroom compared to the Punch, while also having a longer wheelbase, which translates to better highway stability.

In terms of engine specifications, the Hyundai Exter CNG and the Tata Punch CNG use a 1.2-litre engine. However, in CNG mode, the Punch makes more power and torque compared to the Exter, while the Hyundai offers more mileage.

That said, the biggest factor here will be the pricing. The Hyundai Exter is priced at Rs 8.50 lakh onwards, while the Tata Punch CNG is priced at Rs 7.23 lakh onwards, both ex-showroom.
