If there is a company which has the potential to challenge Tesla in the global EV market then it has to be Build Your Dreams (BYD). The Chinese manufacturer has made rapid strides in the electric vehicle market with its premium range of products. Furthermore, the company’s blade cells battery technology has proved to be revolutionary for skateboard EV platforms.

The compact electric SUV first broke cover in China in January 2024. BYD showcased its latest EV innovation in the form of Atto 2 at the Brussels Motor Show 2025 last week ahead of its market debut in Europe next month.. As the name suggests, the Atto 2 sits below the Atto 3 in BYD’s lineup.

BYD Atto 2: What’s it?

Also known as ‘Yuan Up’ in its home market, the Atto 2 measures 4,310mm long, 1,830 mm, wide, and 1,675mm tall. It is said to be based on BYD’s third-gen electric car platform ‘e-platform 3.0’. Most of the design elements of the Atto 2 seem to be inspired by its larger sibling. This includes similar bi-projector LED headlights with integrated LED DRLs, and black claddings on wheel arches and door sills.

Other visual highlights include connected LED taillamps, silver accents on claddings, blacked-out pillars, a sharkfin antenna, roof-mounted spoiler, and a faux diffuser at the rear bumper.

Inside the cabin, the Atto 2 gets an all-black interior theme and a 5-seat layout with feature highlights such as 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital driver’s display, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS features. The Atto 2 offers a boot space of 400 litres.

BYD Atto 2: Powertrain specs

The Atto 2 EV will initially come with a front-wheel drive configuration powered by a single electric motor generating 174 bhp. This motor draws energy from BYD’s in-house developed 45.1kWh Blade Cell battery pack. The Chinese EV manufacturer claims a driving range of up to 312 km (WLTP), with a longer-range version boasting an expected 402 kilometers, slated for release at a later date.

BYD Atto 2: Will it launch in India?

A market launch of the BYD Atto 2 is still not confirmed for India. However, BYD India had earlier confirmed the development of a new EV priced around Rs 20 lakh. The Atto 2 fits the bill perfectly in this case. If and when launched in India, it will compete against other compact electric SUVs such as the MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6, and the upcoming Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara.
