We have all heard ‘ride slow’ during the monsoon season and to simply put it, it is good advice. Given that riding in the monsoon can be tricky, it takes some skill to ride well in the wet. However, with a few tips in mind, riding in the rain can be safer than you think. Here are some important tips to keep in mind when riding in the rain.
Check all systems before departure
Before heading out on the ride, ensure the motorcycle is in good shape, all the lights work, the brakes are good, the tyre pressure is as recommended, the tyres are in good condition, and the metre console works well. Head out only after these checks are done and if anything is not working or needs a replacement, get it done first.
Slow down
At times, just following general advice helps. Slow down when riding in the rain since traction is low. Braking distance can increase drastically in wet conditions and during a case of emergency, things can get out of control. So just keep it slow.
Another thing to remember is to be gentle, be it while accelerating or braking, or around corners. Roads can be slippery, so being gentle is the key point here.
Be visible
Most love black riding gear, including me. However, this poses a threat of not being visible. Bright riding gear helps and a flashy helmet really helps. However, for those with dark gear, a reflective jacket is something to consider, since just being visible makes a lot of difference.
That said, it’s not just about the rider but the motorcycle as well. Use your headlights, and ensure that the tail lamps work. Do not turn on the hazard lights until there is a hazard. Just the headlight and tail lamps will do the job. Also, while changing lanes or turning, indicate well in advance.
Waterproof everything
Invest in good saddlebags, a tail bag, or any luggage for that matter. Ensure it is waterproof because what you carry on the ride needs to be dry. It could be electronic gadgets, laptops, chargers, or anything. Even clothes need to be dry. One cannot go wrong with fully waterproof luggage even during summer.
Plan and prepare
The last but important tip is to plan the ride well, sort out accommodations in advance and riding safe. The day’s route might take longer than usual, but keep it steady. Some routes may be prone to landslides and blocks, so if that’s the case, have a secondary plan. Also, keep an eye out for the weather on the route you’re travelling, as this can help make changes on the go if necessary.
