Ather Energy is planning to expand its electric scooter lineup in the near future. The Bengaluru-based startup currently offers three e-scooters namely 450S, 450X and the recently launched 450 Apex. The company is reported;y working on a new affordable family electric scooter which has been spied testing on a few occasions in recent months.
Expected to hit the Indian market by mid-2024, this upcoming e-scooter is speculated to be named ‘Diesel’. That’s a very peculiar choice of name considering the whole movement against internal combustion engines (ICE), particularly diesel units spearheaded by EV manufacturers around the world.
Ather ‘Diesel’ e-scooter in works
A few weeks back, Ather Energy Co-founder and CEO, Tarun Mehta, confirmed via his social media handles that the company is indeed working on a “family scooter”. During a recent meeting with suppliers, Mehta highlighted the company’s focus on increased space and comfort, positioning it as a practical solution for urban families.
The upcoming scooter will also mark the departure from Ather’s current 450 series platform which was known for its performance. As per previous spy shots, this scooter will flaunt a completely different design from the current Ather 450s featuring a wide and flat floorboard and generous real estate for the seat.
With Ather aiming to diversify its range, the upcoming scooter will stress on practicality and user convenience. Uno Minda Ltd., one of Ather’s suppliers, expressed pride in being part of the upcoming scooter project. Xabier Eskibel, Head Marketing – 2W Segment at Uno Minda, highlighted the scooter’s unique features, such as a spacious seat designed for family enjoyment. In the process, Eskibel gave out the name of the scooter.
As of now, there are no clear details about the Ather Diesel e-scooter. Upon launch, it will lock horns with other battery-powered scooters from brands like Bajaj, TVS, Hero MotorCorp, Ola Electric, and Simple Energy.
