Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has left Mercedes with an open seat, however, who can the driver be? Alonso, Sainz, or Albon?

Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari for the 2025 Formula One season came as a surprise to many. The multiple world champion is set to drive for the colours most F1 drivers dream of but only a lucky few get to. The switch is official and also confirmed by Hamilton himself, who thanked Mercedes for the 11-year stint.

However, beyond the surprise is a bigger question — who will drive for Mercedes now? Although many speculations are out there, former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has suggested Fernando Alonso. Also, there have been rumours about Mercedes boss Toto Wolff being in touch with Alonso to make the switch to drive the Silver Arrow, as Alonso’s contract will also end after this season.

Could it be Carlos Sainz? This seems to be the most practical answer, however, there have been no open announcements yet. Also, Sainz could get a seat with Red Bull alongside his former teammate Max Verstappen. However, if rumours are to be believed, Sainz can switch to Sauber, signing a long-term contract, which will become the Audi Works F1 team from 2026. Now, how this rumour came about is anyone’s guess.

How about Alex Albon? The Thai racing driver is also on the lookout and is a compelling contender for Meredes-Benz. This is also a possibility as Albon currently races with Williams, Mercedes’ customer. However, there are other rumours as well, some reporting that Albon has been offered a seat with Red Bull. Will he take the move to return to his former team?
