The 2025 Dakar Rally continues to throw in surprises, and Stage 5 had a big one for Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah, who won the stage but was stripped of his win. That said, Honda rider Van Beveren was handed a penalty, while race leader Sanders was also handed a penalty, taking his stage finish to 12th place. There is some good news as well, as KTM still wins the stage, while Lategan still holds the overall lead.

The day’s win went to KTM’s Luciano Benavides, who took his first stage win this year, however, the actual winner was Honda’s Van Beveren. The Frenchman was handed a two-minute penalty, dropping him to second. This was not the only penalty of the day, as the current race leader, Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders was also handed an eight-minute and ten-second penalty, ranking him 12th on the stage. However, the Aussie still leads in the overall standings.

Hero riders Nacho Cornejo and Ross Branch came in third and fourth, while the defending Dakar champion, Brabec finished the stage in fifth, followed by two more Honda riders — Howes and Shareina. In the overall standings after Stage 5 of the 2025 Dakar Rally, Sanders leads, with Shareina in second, followed by Branch.

In the cars category, Nasser Al-Attiyah put on a strong performance, dominating the stage to cross the line first. However, the Qatari was handed a ten-minute penalty for losing his spare wheel, putting him in second, and giving the stage win to Toyota’s Seth Quintero. Al-Attiyah lost the spare wheel owing to a quick-release mechanism that Dacia uses, which makes it easy to remove the wheel, but as it proves, it’s also easy to lose it over a hard bump. Quintero was actually awarded time by the ASO for helping Carlos Sainz Sr, making him the stage winner.

Ford’s Ekstrom finished the stage in third, ahead of the overall race leader, South Africa’s Lategan. In the overall standings, it’s the South African who leads, followed by Azeed Al Rajhi and Ekstrom in third. Nasser Al-Attiyah currently is in fourth overall, with a 35-minute gap from the leader.
