Maruti Suzuki India reported mixed sales figures for the month. Total sales rose 2.7% year-on-year, reaching 1.89 lakh units, driven largely by a strong export performance.

Export Growth Drives Overall Sales

Total exports surged 52% to 42,204 units, helping offset a drop in domestic demand. Domestic sales, however, fell 6% to 1.47 lakh units compared to the same period last year.

GST Reforms Boost Early Deliveries

The company also noted that GST reforms have improved customer sentiment, with Maruti achieving its highest-ever deliveries of 1.65 lakh units in the first eight days of the month.

Eicher Motors reported a strong performance in September 2025, with total motorcycle sales rising 43% year-on-year to 1.24 lakh units. Domestic sales mirrored this growth, reaching 1.13 lakh units, up 43% from the same month last year.

Exports also surged, climbing 41% to 10,755 units, reflecting growing international demand for the company’s motorcycles.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. reported their best-ever monthly sales performance in September 2025. The company achieved its highest-ever monthly sales at 60,907 units, reflecting a 47% year-on-year growth. Electric vehicles (EVs) posted a new record with 9,191 units sold, a 96% increase compared to last year.

The Nexon led the charge, crossing 22,500 units, the highest-ever monthly sales for any Tata Motors passenger vehicle. The newly launched Harrier and Safari Adventure X editions also saw unprecedented demand, delivering their best-ever combined sales, powered by Tata’s expanding multi-powertrain strategy. The Punch continued its strong momentum, cementing its position as a popular compact SUV. Meanwhile, CNG powertrain models hit record sales of 17,800 units, growing 105% year-on-year.

Tata Motors also registered its highest-ever monthly bookings, with volumes doubling in the second half of September following the introduction of GST 2.0.

Ashok Leyland posted a 9% year-on-year rise in total sales, reaching 18,813 units in September 2025. Domestic sales stood at 17,209 units, up 7% from the same month last year.

In the Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M&HCV) segment, domestic sales grew 3% to 10,499 units. Meanwhile, Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales showed stronger momentum, rising 14% to 7,005 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) reported that its Trucks and Buses business (CVs above 3.5T), including exports, sold 1,904 vehicles in September 2025, marking an 8% decline compared to the same month last year. The division now also includes SML Isuzu Ltd. (SML), following Mahindra’s acquisition of a majority stake.

Mahindra said it has passed on the full GST benefits to customers and expects gradual recovery in demand in the coming months.

“The CV industry is navigating a transition period marked by both opportunities from lower GST and ongoing industry challenges. The month of September was partially impacted by deferment of purchase by customers till introduction of GST 2.0,” Vinod Sahay, Executive Chairman – SML, President – Aerospace, Defence, Trucks, Buses & CE, M&M, said.

Tata Motors posted robust growth in September 2025, with both commercial and passenger vehicle segments showing strong performance.

The company’s total commercial vehicle (CV) sales rose 19% year-on-year to 35,862 units. Domestic CV sales increased 16% to 33,148 units.

In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, sales surged 47% to 60,907 units, while domestic PV sales grew 45% to 59,667 units. Electric vehicles (EVs) continued their rapid momentum, with sales almost doubling – up 96% at 9,191 units.

For the July–September quarter (Q2 FY26), Tata Motors reported total CV sales of 94,681 units, a 12% increase, while domestic CV sales climbed 9% year-on-year.

“Q2 FY26 was a mixed quarter for the commercial vehicles industry, start marked by subdued market conditions and ending with a promising resurgence in demand. While July faced headwinds due to monsoon and August reflected cautious sentiment ahead of the GST 2.0 rollout, the onset of the festive season and lower GST rates from late September brought a good recovery in sales, bookings and sentiment,” Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors Ltd.,said.

Several automakers, including Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. and TVS Motor Company Ltd., are expected to release their September 2025 sales numbers later on Wednesday. Major players such as Bajaj Auto Ltd., Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Hyundai Motor India Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. have already reported their figures, showing varied growth trends across segments.

Commercial vehicle sales for the half-year stood at 3,87,579 units, a 14% increase over 3,39,435 units last year. Domestic sales were flat at 2,49,681 units versus 2,48,034, while exports recorded a sharp 51% jump to 1,37,898 units from 91,401 units in the year-ago period.

In the commercial vehicle category, overall sales increased 15% to 79,651 units, up from 69,042 units last year. Domestic commercial vehicle sales were stable at 52,064 units versus 52,554 units in September 2024, but exports surged 67% to 27,587 units, compared to 16,488 units a year ago.

Bajaj Auto posted a steady sales performance in September 2025, with domestic two-wheeler sales rising 5% to 2,73,188 units, compared to 2,59,333 units a year ago. Exports in this segment showed stronger momentum, climbing 12% to 1,57,665 units from 1,41,156 in September 2024.

For the April–September 2025 period, Bajaj Auto sold a total of 24,05,357 units, reflecting a 4% year-on-year growth. Two-wheeler sales reached 20,17,778 units, up slightly from 19,84,125 units in the same period last year. While domestic two-wheeler sales fell 8% to 11,25,920 units, exports grew strongly by 17% to 8,91,858 units.

JSW MG Motor India announced a 34% increase in wholesales, selling 6,728 units in September 2025, compared to 5,021 units in the same month last year. The company credited this growth to the recent GST reduction and the start of the Navratri festive season, which lifted customer sentiment and fueled strong demand.

Both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) models and Electric Vehicles (EVs) contributed to the sales momentum, the automaker said in its statement.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) had an exceptional month. The company sold a total of 70,347 vehicles, marking a 10% increase compared to September 2024. SUV sales hit an all-time high, with 37,313 customers buying Hyundai SUVs last month. SUVs accounted for 72.4% of domestic sales, the highest in the company’s history.

September was especially remarkable for models like the Creta, which sold 18,861 units, breaking its own sales record. The Venue also saw its best monthly sales in the past 20 months. Hyundai’s exports rose by nearly 44% to 18,800 units, the highest monthly export in the past 33 months. Analysts attribute this growth to reduced GST rates, strong festive-season demand, and heightened customer interest. HMIL describes this surge as ‘double-engine growth.’

Bajaj Auto Ltd. enhanced the appeal of its best-selling Pulsar motorcycles by offering an additional 50% financing benefit to customers, complementing the recent GST reduction. The government cut GST on motorcycles under 350cc from 28% to 18%, effective September 22, 2025.

The two-wheeler segment has not yet reflected significant benefits from the recent GST rate cut, as buyers are gradually returning to showrooms. APL Apollo’s Q2 FY26 sales volume rose 13% YoY to 8,55,037 tons, while H1 FY26 cumulative sales increased 11% to 16,49,387 tons, indicating robust demand across segments.

APL Apollo’s Q2 FY26 sales volume rose 13% year-on-year to 8,55,037 tons. For H1 FY26, cumulative sales increased 11% to 16,49,387 tons, reflecting strong demand and robust market performance.

Atul Auto reported total sales of 3,503 units in September, up 4.2% year-on-year. Domestic sales declined 3% to 2,971 units.

Adding to that he mentioned that, “Our domestic sales in September stood at 51,547 units, driven by vibrant festive demand and strong customer interest across all segments. We have also witnessed highest-ever domestic SUV sales penetration in the history of the Company at 72.4%, with CRETA scoring the highest-ever monthly sales at 18,861 units. VENUE too reported a 20-month high sales volume of 11,484 units in September”.

Hyundai Motor India reported 51,547 units in domestic sales in September 2025, driven by GST cuts, festive demand, and strong consumer interest. SUVs contributed 37,313 units, marking the highest-ever share at 72.4% of total sales. The Hyundai Venue achieved its highest monthly sales in the last 20 months with 11,484 units sold.

On the exports front, cumulative shipments from April to September 2025 rose 17% YoY to 99,540 units, reflecting strong international demand.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) announced total sales of 31,091 units in September 2025, up 16% year-on-year from 26,847 units in September 2024. Domestic sales stood at 27,089 units, while 4,002 units were exported.

Mahindra & Mahindra has recorded its strongest monthly performance in September 2025, achieving total vehicle sales of 1,00,298 units, marking a robust 16% year-on-year growth compared to the same period last year. The company’s SUV division emerged as the primary growth driver, registering domestic sales of 56,233 units in September 2025, representing a substantial 10% increase over the 51,062 units sold in September 2024. More significantly, this figure reflects a dramatic 42.7% month-on-month surge compared to August 2025’s 39,399 units, highlighting the combined impact of festive season demand and the recently implemented GST 2.0 benefits.

The September performance stands in stark contrast to preceding months, with SUV sales showing consistent improvement. Comparing September’s SUV sales to earlier months in 2025 reveals the seasonal uptick: a 18.9% increase from June’s 47,306 units and a 12.8% rise from July’s 49,871 units. However, the most dramatic improvement came from August’s deliberately suppressed figures of 39,399 units, as the company had strategically reduced wholesale billing ahead of the GST rate changes.

Steel Strips Wheels reported a monthly turnover of Rs 410.6 crore, up 13.4% YoY, and a gross turnover of Rs 495.7 crore, up 12.3%. Growth in value terms was 13%, while volumes remained flat. Gains in aluminium, tractor, and truck segments were offset by declines in 2Ws, 3Ws, passenger car steel, and exports.

Motilal Oswal has raised FY26/FY27 volume growth estimates for 2Ws (4%/7.5%), PVs (3%/8%), CVs (5%/7%), and tractors (10%/6%). Top OEM picks include Maruti Suzuki and M&M, supported by new launches, exports, and positive rural sentiment, while ratings remain Neutral for TTMT, BJAUT, TVSL, and Sell for EIM.

Steel Strips reported total sales up 13% YoY, with tractor sales volumes rising 21%. Net turnover increased 13.4% to Rs 411 crore, and gross turnover grew 12.3% to Rs 496 crore. However, overall export volumes declined 66%.

Tata Motors is expected to post the highest growth, signaling a revival after the recent slowdown. New launches like the Harrier and Altroz refresh are yet to contribute fully.

September farm equipment sales surged 49% YoY to 66,111 units, with domestic sales up 50% at 64,946 units and exports rising 10% to 1,165 units. Year-to-date, total farm equipment sales increased 20% to 2.57 lakh units, driven by domestic growth of 20% to 2.47 lakh units and exports up 12% to 9,689 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra posted total auto sales of 1,00,298 units in September, up 16% YoY. UV sales rose 10% to 56,233 units, while total exports jumped 43% to 4,320 units. Domestic CV sales grew 18% to 26,278 units. SUV billings were slightly subdued due to limited trailer availability in the last 10 days of the month.

Two-Wheelers: Retail demand, already strong in July–August, has picked up further during Navratri after the Shradh period. Dealers report higher walk-ins and pent-up demand, though discounts have eased in the festive period, especially for entry-level models. The 2W segment is expected to post 11% YoY growth.

Commercial Vehicles: GST rate cuts impact sub-segments differently. Many HCV (60–70%) and ILCV (40%) buyers claim input tax credit, limiting benefits, while only 18% of SCV buyers claim ITC, making low-tonnage segments the biggest gainers. CVs have recovered since July–August, with 3% YoY growth expected in September dispatches.

Tractors: Strong rural sentiment, normal monsoon, healthy crop patterns, improved MSPs, and GST reduction to 5% on tractors and components have kept momentum high. Tractor dispatches are expected to rise 11% YoY.
