Tesla unveils new Model Y L in China: Could this revise its fortunes?

Tesla has unveiled the Model Y L, a six-seat, longer-wheelbase SUV, set to debut in China this autumn, aiming to bolster its position in the world’s largest EV market.

Tesla has been dominating the automobile news both in the domestic and international markets, and the latest buzz is that the Elon Musk-led company has unveiled the much-awaited Model Y L in China. In the world’s most competitive and largest electric vehicle market, the Tesla Model Y L is expected to make its official debut in autumn. Tesla has fallen in the pecking order in many markets around the world, and with BYD ruling the roost in China, Tesla is strategising how to regain lost ground with its best-selling vehicle, the Model Y. Here’s all you need to know about the Model Y L.

Tesla Model Y L: Six-seater EV SUV

Tesla’s Shanghai manufacturing plant, or as the company calls it, Gigafactory Shanghai, will be rolling out the new Model Y L. The Model Y sold in India is also made here. According to CarNewsChina, Tesla has applied for the license for the longer and more spacious Model Y L. The report has confirmed that the US EV maker has submitted the documents to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). CNEV Post has stated that the Model Y L official serial product number is TSL6500BEVBA0, and it will be a six-seat SUV.

The new Model Y L will be based on a longer wheelbase of 3,040 mm, having an advantage of 150 mm over the Model Y. Its width remains the same at 1,920 mm, while the height is 4,976 mm, taller by 179 mm.

Tesla offers two Model Y versions — Rear-Wheel Drive and Long-Range All-Wheel Drive. The new Model Y L will be slotted above the AWD trim and will be packed with a twin-motor setup. The front motor has an output of 142 kW and 198 kW for the rear, and a top speed of 201 kmph. Reports have revealed that the Model Y L will be powered by ternary batteries supplied by LG Energy Solution. The new EV’s kerb weight is 2,088 kg, while the standard Model Y weighs 1,992 kg.

Tesla has not revealed the official price of the Model Y L, but local media have reported it could start from $55,000, while the standard RWD version starts from $36,700 and the AWD costs $43,680. After launching the Model Y L in China, it is expected for Tesla to bring it to the North America market.
