Tesla has opened new job vacancies for India, including positions that oversee component sourcing for new products the electric vehicle giant is exploring. The fresh nine positions come in addition to the 13 roles Tesla opened in mid-February.
In addition to the new hiring, Tesla India Motor and Energy—which had cleared the homologation stage for all four models/variants it sought approval for in India in 2021—has now received clearance for a total of eight models/variants out of the nine it sought approval for, according to the government-controlled Vahan portal.
While previous positions were related to areas such as sales and service support, operations analysis, and charging development, the new openings focus on parts supporting design for manufacturing during the early stages of product development.
Vacant spots include roles in purchasing and electronics within the supplier industrialisation engineer (SIE) division. Tesla’s Electronics supplier industrialisation engineering team plays a crucial role in developing and qualifying critical component and electronic part top-level assembly processes with its suppliers.
As this team provides regional support for new product introduction (NPI) and legacy product management within the supply chain, the positions opened in India further fuel speculation that Tesla is planning a new product for the Indian market—one that could be manufactured locally using domestically sourced parts.
Notably, Tesla has been sourcing parts from India through a group of suppliers, which, according to Union minister Piyush Goyal, stood at $1 billion a couple of years ago and was slated to reach $1.7-$1.9 billion in FY24.
Tesla is currently hiring for 22 roles in Mumbai and Pune. These include SIE – engineer, SIE- purchasing, charging developer, PCB design engineer, electronic systems, delivery operations specialist, application product engineer, frontend software engineer, application support analyst, regional security specialist, service advisor, parts advisor, service technician, service manager, and Tesla advisor.
While states including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka have shown interest in hosting a Tesla factory, US President Donald Trump in February said it would be “unfair” to the US if Elon Musk decided to build a factory in India.
Although uncertainty still surrounds Tesla’s manufacturing plans in India, the carmaker has secured showroom spaces in Mumbai and Delhi. Its first showroom, spread over an area of 3,000 sq ft, is slated to open in the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai’s business district, while the second showroom will be located in the Aerocity area in Delhi.
