All-electric Yamaha dirt bike patents filed

Newly surfaced patent images reveal Yamaha’s new electric dirt bike and its propulsion system.

Yamaha has filed patents for an all-electric motocross bike, as leaked images reveal. The Japanese company has already developed the TY-E trials e-bike, which is competing professionally and the new (YZ-E?) will soon join competitive racing.

While testing the TY-E, Yamaha realised that adding a flywheel and a traditional clutch gave the motorcycle much better performance during slow-speed manoeuvres and instant acceleration during race starts. For the dirt bike, Yamaha has used a torsion damper with the gearbox, as the use case for the two motorcycles is different.

The result of doing so is better throttle response again, as racing in the dirt requires variation in the acceleration and the key to this is smooth delivery.

Yamaha or the patent images do not reveal any other details of the battery pack or its specifications, as the propulsion system is the highlight here. There is no word on when Yamaha plans to launch the motorcycle, but we can expect to showcase the prototype in a few months.
