Hatchbacks were once a very desirable body style for an average Indian car buyer, especially for the middle class buyers. However, with the advent of more and more SUVs and crossovers, the hatchback segment has somewhat lost its charm.
As a result, the sales volume and number of options in this segment has dropped down significantly over the last few years. Let us look at top 6 hatchbacks sold for the month of February 2024.

Maruti WagonR
Maruti WagonR continued its merry run by taking the top spot for February 2024. The Indo-Japanese carmaker sold 19,412 units of the tallboy hatch last month as opposed to 16,889 units in February last year. This resulted in a YoY growth of 15%. WagonR wasn’t only the highest-selling hatchback but the selling passenger vehicle model in February this year.
Maruti Baleno
Maruti Baleno took the second spot by registering a volume of 17,517 units last month which led to a YoY decline of 6%. During the same period last year, the Indo-Japanese carmaker sold 18,592 units of the premium hatchback. In January this year, Maruti dispatched 19,630 units of Baleno across the country.
Maruti Swift
Maruti Suzuki sold 13,165 units of Swift across the country last month. This translated to a significant YoY drop of 28.5%. Even MoM drop was recorded at 14.35%. These drop in numbers can be attributed to the launch of a new generation model of Swift which is around the corners.
Maruti Alto
Alto is the oldest hatchback model in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio, yet it remains a favourable choice as a budget car, especially among first car buyers. The carmaker sold 12,395 units of Alto last month which led to a massive 42% YoY drop. During the same month last year, Maruti sold 21,411 units of Alto.
Tata Tiago
Tata Motors found a place in the list with the Tiago accumulating 6,947 units in February 2024. This led to almost a 7% YoY decline. On the flip side, the MoM figure grew by7% since Tiago recorded a volume of 6,482 units in January this year.
Hyundai i20
Hyundai registered a monthly volume of 4,947 units in February 2024 which translated to a massive 45% YoY decline. During the same month last year, Hyundai sold 9,287 units of its premium hatch. The Korean carmaker registered a monthly volume of 7,083 units in January 2024 which translated to a 30% MoM decline.
