Tata Motors has been on a rampage for the last 5-6 years with extensive car launches, both combustion engines as well as fully electric models. The homegrown carmaker is now gearing up to launch the Harrier.ev on June 3. The electric SUV has been anticipated for a very long time.
Apart from the all-electric Harrier, Tata is also working on reviving the Sierra nameplate for the longest time. A concept of the same was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 and earlier this year at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, the carmaker showcased a closer to production prototype of the SUV.
Like the current Tata PV lineup, the Sierra will be available in both ICE and EV derivatives. In an exclusive interaction with Vivek Srivatsa, Express Drives has learned that Sierra and Sierra.ev will be launched in the market within this fiscal year, i.e., by March 2026. Test mules of the SUV have been frequently spotted over the last few months. Let us look at what we know about the Sierra and Sierra EV so far.
Tata Sierra, Sierra EV: Design
As seen in the Expo earlier this year, Tata Motors has masterfully reinvented the iconic Sierra, blending modern aesthetics with its nostalgic charm. The original’s expansive rear glass has been replaced in line with today’s safety regulations, ensuring greater protection for occupants. Up front, the new Sierra makes a bold statement with its wide stance, sleek LED DRLs tucked beneath the bonnet, a glossy black grille, and distinctive vertically stacked LED headlights positioned above a sturdy metal skid plate.
Along the sides, the vehicle retains its classic boxy silhouette, complemented by a stylish dual-tone floating roof and striking alloy wheels. At the rear, a refined connected LED tail light and the ‘Sierra’ nameplate beneath the Tata badge complete the design with understated elegance.
Tata Sierra, Sierra EV: Interiors & Features
While the dashboard design aligns with Tata’s latest lineup, the center console tunnel sets itself apart from other current models. Patent filings from earlier this year showcase a recognizable dashboard layout, including a centrally positioned touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and sleek horizontal AC vents.
It also features Tata’s new 4-spoke steering wheel, which incorporates a backlit display showcasing the brand’s logo. The dashboard adopts a refined, layered design that flows elegantly downward and is accented by a centrally mounted speaker, a detail retained from the concept version.
In terms of amenities, we expect Tata Sierra and Sierra EV to come equipped with panoramic sunroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car technology, voice-enabled features, and auto climate control. Safety will be taken care of by six airbags, a 360-degree camera and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System offering features like lane-keep assist, lane change assistance, automatic emergency braking, etc.
Tata Sierra, Sierra EV: Expected Powertrain
The ICE-powered Sierra will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. This includes an all-new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque, alongside the well-known 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine currently used in the Harrier and Safari, which produces 168 bhp and a peak torque of 350 Nm. Transmission choices are expected to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
As of now, there is no indication of the specifications about the Sierra EV but we expect it to borrow the same powertrain as the Harrier EV. Expect the Sierra EV to offer a peak range of 500 km on a single charge and come equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup.
