Tata is prepared to launch the all new compact sedan Tigor on 29th March, Tata Motors President Mayank Pareek confirmed during the Geneva Motor Show. The Tigor will replace Tata’s entry level sedan Indigo CS, and would compare with Ford Figo Aspire, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and other lower variants of the segment. Tata is apparently planning on roping in Linel Messi for pitching the Togor in the market. It is expected to launch at an aggressive price tag of Rs 4-5.5 lakh. Tata is also launching the Kite hatchback sometime before the Tigor.
The new compact sedan will have options of two new Tata engines – a 1.2 petrol unit that is expected to produce 85 PS and about 110 Nm of peak torque. The other option is 1.0-litre turbocharged diesel unit that would develop under 70 PS of peak power and about 140 Nm of peak torque. Expected mileage figures of the diesel engine is 25 kmpl.
The design of the Tigor and the Kite will be quite different from what Tata cars like the Indica and Indigo CS have been for years. The new cars will definitely have sharper design elements. Especially, the rear end of the Tigor has been given a much needed upgrade, and the compact sedan is more of a fastback from the back.
The Tigor will not have any direct competition in the market. It would comparable to the base variants of the Figo Aspire, Dzire and the likes. Fully kitted top variant of the Tigor would most likely be a segment of it own, and would perhaps help Tata gain some traction in the passenger car market in India.
