Hyundai Creta EV confirmed for launch in January 2025

All recent spy shots suggest that the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV will visually be similar to the existing fossil-fueled Creta.

It’s an open secret that Hyundai is working on an all-electric version of Creta. Test mules of the battery-powered Creta have been caught on camera on multiple occasions in the past few months. Around a month and a half back, it was reported that Hyundai will commence with the production of the mass-produced EV by the end of this year.

Now, the Korean carmaker has shed more light on the development of this “mass-market” electric vehicle. In a recent virtual media sales conference, Tarun Garg, CEO, Hyundai Motor India, confirmed that the company will launch its first high-volume EV in India in January 2025.

Based on the same platform as the ICE-powered Creta, in all likelihood, the fully-electric Creta will be rolled out of the same production line as the latter at Hyundai’s production facility based out of Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The fact that Hyundai is utilising an already existing platform should make the Creta EV very cost competitive.

Hyundai Creta EV to rival Maruti eVX

Launch of the all-electric Creta is expected to coincide with another electric SUV in the same space— the production version of Maruti Suzuki eVX— which broke cover for the time at the 2023 Auto Expo. Both battery-powered SUVs will square-off against each other along with the upcoming coupe electric SUV from Tata Motors named Curvv. All three newcomers will also tackle challenges from the MG ZS EV.

Hyundai Creta EV: Expected specs

Previously it was reported that Creta EV is likely to feature a 45kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is slightly smaller than the ones used by its primary rivals. For instance, MG ZS EV gets a 50.3kWh battery. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki eVX is expected to offer two battery options– an entry-level 48kWh variant and a top-spec 60kWh unit.

It was revealed earlier that the Creta EV will share the electric motor as the latest-gen, entry-level Kona Electric on sale overseas. This means it will be powered by a single-motor setup driving the front wheels and delivering 136 bhp and 255 Nm of torque. Unlike the eVX, Creta EV is expected to be based on the same platform as its ICE-powered sibling.
