From Swift to Tiago: Top 5 hatchbacks sold in May

Besides Maruti Swift, which received a major upgrade last month, none of the other hatchbacks registered a positive YoY growth.

Hatchback sales have dwindled over the past few years with the advent of more and more SUVs in the market and shift in consumer sentiment. Today there are fewer hatchbacks available in the market and only a handful of them generate sizable monthly sales volume. In this article, we have compiled the list of 5 best-selling hatchbacks for May 2024.

Maruti Swift

Maruti Suzuki launched the much-awaited fourth-gen Swift in India last month which received a series of updates over the outgoing model. The hatchback now gets a more efficient but less powerful three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine replacing the older K12 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol mill. The new-gen model helped Swift regain the top spot becoming not just the top-selling hatchback but also the highest-selling PV in the country.

The Indo Japanese carmaker sold 19,393 units of Swift to dealerships across the country which resulted in a 12% YoY growth. Swift was also the only model among the top 5 hatchbacks to register a positive YoY growth.

Maruti Wagon R

Maruti Wagon R became the second best-selling hatchback in the country in May with 14,492 units sold. The tallboy hatch registered a negative YoY growth of 11%. Wagon R is priced between Rs 5.54 lakh and Rs 7.38 lakh (ex-showroom).

Maruti Baleno

Another strong seller for Maruti, the Baleno recorded a monthly sales of 12,842 units in May leading to a decline of 31% YoY. The premium hatchback is priced between Rs. 6.66 and Rs 9.88 lakh (ex-showroom). The Hyundai i20 rival is available in four variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha.

Maruti Alto

Maruti Alto is the most affordable car in India currently with prices starting from Rs 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom). The company sold 7,675 units of the micro hatch in May which resulted in a decline of 13% YoY.

Tata Tiago

Tata Motors was able to sell only 5,927 units of Tiago in May 2024 which was a  27% decline from May last year. Tiago serves as the entry-level model for Tata Motors priced between Rs 5.65 lakh and Rs 8.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Tiago is available in petrol, CNG, and fully-electric powertrains.
