BYD has patentted two new EV concepts in India

BYD has generated a limited but positive response with its electric vehicles namely Atto 3 and eMAX 7. Even the fully-imported BYD Seal received positive feedback from industry veterans and folks from automotive media who got their hands on the sleek electric sedan. The Chinese automaker intends to increase its presence in India’s passenger vehicle market with more models in the future.

BYD has filed two new patent applications— one  SUV and one sports car— in India which recently got approved by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The former is called BYD Atto 3 whereas the latter is called BYD 9 sports car. The patent applications along with the images have now leaked on the internet.

BYD Bao 3: What is it?

The Bao 3 is based on the rugged Super 3 concept car part of the portfolio of Fang Cheng Bao, a subsidiary brand owned by BYD. For reference, the Fang Cheng Bao brand focuses primarily on performance-oriented SUVs, targeted at off-road and race enthusiasts. The design of the Bao 3 is more in line with rugged off-road SUVs featuring chunky wheel arches with thick black claddings, high profile tyres, and a muscular front bumper.

It gets an upright front fascia with a blacked-out sealed nose and LED headlights, and aero-optimised flush-fitting door handles on the side. The patent image also shows the SUV carrying a load which is tied down to the hooks on each side of the bonnet. This suggests the model patented is most likely at a concept stage.

However, the China-spec Bao 3 measures 4,605 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, 1,720 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,745 mm. Moreover, it weighs over 2,150 kg. Highlighting its off-roading credentials, the Bao 3 gets an approach angle of 25 degree and departure angle of 28 degree.

It is powered by dual electric motors – one on each axle, with a combined output of 444 bhp. As for performance, the Bao 3 can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 4.9 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 201 kmph. The motors draw energy from BYD’s highly advanced and efficient Blade cells.

BYD Bao 9: What is it?

The Bao 9 is an open-top pure-electric sports car based on the Super 9 concept car. Like the Bao 3, the BYD Bao 9 also appears to be patented at a concept stage. Some of the key visual highlights of the two-seater electric speedster include a curvy profile, scissor doors. Dual LED taillights, and a distinctively styled rear spoiler.
