Volkswagen has globally unveiled the new generation Tiguan at its world premiere in Wolfsburg, Germany. Tiguan has been the company’s highest-selling model since 2018 with more than 76 lakh units of the SUV sold globally since its debut in 2007. The third-gen model of the premium mid-size SUV will roll out from its Wolfsburg facility later this year.
It will first launch in various European markets starting early 2024, followed by the US market in the preceding months. For 2024, the new-gen Tiguan gets a new design, more features and a new plug-in hybrid engine option. It is based on the brand’s updated MQB ‘evo’ platform.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: Design & dimensions
Tiguan is the first MQB model to come with the newly developed IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights that give the front fascia a new appearance. This headlight cluster uses 38,400 multi-pixel LEDs for illumination and both units are connected by a slim LED light strip situated on top of the partial glass cover.
Compared to the boxy profile of the outgoing model, the third-gen Tiguan gets a slightly curvy profile which has helped VW achieve a lower drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd (down from 0.33 Cd). Other notable visual highlights include new dual-tone alloy wheels, more pronounced haunches and a full-width LED taillight.
In terms of dimensions, the new third-gen Tiguan measures 4539 mm in length, 1639 mm in height, and 1842 mm in width along with a wheelbase of 2680mm. This makes it 4mm taller and 30mm longer than the outgoing model. Further, boot space has increased by 37 litres to 652 litres.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: Interiors & features
Inside the cabin, VW claims to have offered high standards of material in addition to a new Digital Cockpit featuring a redesigned 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a driver-oriented 15.1-inch infotainment system running on VW’s latest MIB4 graphic design. The touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel have given way to physical buttons for enhanced tactility.
Further, the volume slider and climate control buttons placed at the base of the central screen are backlit. The new rotary dial on the centre console gets its own mini screen used to control driving profile, radio volume or background lighting colours. The gear lever has been repositioned to the steering column— in line with the new-gen Skoda Kodiaq.
2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: Powertrain options
VW is offering multiple powertrain options with the new-gen Tiguan including a turbo diesel engine (TDI), turbo petrol engines (TSI), mild hybrid turbo petrol engines (eTSI) and plug-in hybrid systems (eHybrid). All powertrains will be offered with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox as standard. VW is yet to reveal specs of these engine options officially. It comes standard with front-wheel drive and options for all-wheel drive.
