Flip-up helmets have gained massive popularity, however, their safety is a big question, as they do not offer adequate protection like a full-face helmet. On the flip side, flip-up helmets offer the best of both worlds and the convenience. To address all the issues, Japanese helmet maker Shoei has come up with a new patent, which might be a step towards solving the problem.

Shoei’s new flip-up helmet patent

As per the patent filed by Shoei, the manufacturer has taken a step towards safety by introducing a piece – like a transition piece – that bridges the gap where the flip-up module connects with the helmet. The transition piece also takes away the rough step flip-up helmets usually have.

The result of introducing the transition element gives the helmet a cleaner look, while also making it more aerodynamic. That said, the new element could also help disperse impact forces better, taking the helmet one step towards being safer.

While this may not be a radical design upgrade, this is a small upgrade towards safety that adds up on a larger scale. And taking into consideration that Shoei is one of the leading helmet manufacturers globally, we can see modular helmets getting safer.
