In recent months, there has been a lot of uncertainty around FasTag. We answer all of your questions and explain how to update your FasTag KYC from the comfort of your own home by online logging. Just to refresh everyone’s memory, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) published two announcements earlier this year: FasTags with completed KYC would be revoked by January 31, 2024, and the “One car, One FasTag” regulation will take effect on April 1, 2024. As the policy’s name implies, only one FasTag can be registered to a vehicle.

Here’s why your car must have a FasTag.

Why is FasTag compulsory?

NHAI made FasTag compulsory in February 2021 to ensure that there’s a seamless flow of vehicles at the toll booth. It is mandatory for both commercial and private four-wheelers. A FasTag is a smart pre-paid sticker which is placed on a vehicle’s windscreen. The tag uses Radio Frequency Identification Technology to automatically pay the toll at digitally-enabled plazas.

Now the question arises, what if you don’t have a problem in carrying hard cash and pay at the toll plaza? Well, then you will end up paying a penalty which is double the amount of the actual toll fee.

How to buy FasTag?

If you want to go all old school and buy a FasTag offline the easiest way to locate an authorized seller is by downloading the My FasTag app. It shows the nearest Point of Sale outlets based on your location or by pin code. One can also buy FasTags from the nearest NHAI toll booth.

Buying online is a lot simpler. The list of the official issuers is listed at npci.org. Go to the issuer’s website click on the FasTag section and fill in the required details. You have to upload scanned copies of the vehicle’s Registration Certificate, an ID proof and a passport photo. After that, choose the payment mode like UPI, debit or credit card or net banking. One also has to provide the address to where the FasTag can be delivered to.

How to update FasTag KYC?

To update the KYC details of the FasTag, there is an online and an offline method.

Log in to the Indian Highway Management Company Limited website (www.npci.org.in) and click on FasTag. Then choose on My Profile, click on Update KYC and then upload ID proof, vehicle registration certificate and a passport-sized photo.

You can also opt for offline and visit the bank that issued the Fastag, fill up the KYC update form and submit it with the required documents mentioned above.
