From overloaded trucks to helmetless riders, the report highlights extreme cases that underline a growing disregard for rules.

In order to reign in traffic offenders, the road transport ministry has decided to introduce a negative points system on the Driving Licence (DL). The new system will monitor offenders for violations such as offences such as jumping signals and speeding, and if a DL has earned enough negative points, the DL can be suspended or cancelled.

Negative points on DL — Why such a harsh step?

The authorities have tried several methods to reduce accidents and traffic violations, including heavy fines and penalties. However, they have not proven to be effective and India records over 1.7 lakh accidents a year. As per reports, the authorities have decided that stringent measures need to be taken and hence the reason for a points system. This will be introduced alongside penalties for violations.

The ministry shared the idea during a meeting held to overhaul the DL system and authorities looked at countries such as Australia, UK, Germany, Brazil, France and Canada, which have a points system. The authorities say that the new points system will be integrated in the next two months when amendments to the law will be made. The good news is, that good drives will be merited points and violets will be demerited.

Other plans part of the new system will be mandatory driving tests for those looking to renew their DL and have committed any offence. Currently, there is no mandate for a driving test for those looking to renew their license before they expire.
