Technology is primarily designed to make our lives easier, and FasTag is no exception. This pre-paid sticker uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to enable smooth payment and vehicle movement at toll plazas. However, despite its convenience, it also poses some challenges. Here are some tips on how you can overcome the most common mistakes people make with FasTag.

Paste the FasTag on windscreen

As mentioned before, the primary purpose of FasTag is to make the payment process at toll booths more convenient and faster. However, some people believe that if they don’t attach the FasTag to their vehicle’s windscreen, they can use it for multiple cars. Unfortunately, this is illegal, and you will end up paying double the toll fee. Additionally, if you spend time searching for the FasTag or retrieving it from the glovebox, you may cause delays for the cars behind you. Therefore, it’s best to attach the FasTag to the windscreen of your vehicle. When you enter the toll booth, the electronic scanner will detect the tag and deduct the appropriate amount.

FasTag account is not transferable

Many may tell you that FasTag accounts are transferable, but this is not true. The current FasTag account has to be closed as it is linked to your bank account. Once this is done then connect with another official bank issuer. The entire process can be done online either via the bank’s official website or mobile app. Once the new FasTag is received, link it to the new bank account or wallet.

One FasTag and two vehicles are illegal

Earlier, there was confusion over whether a single FasTag can be used for multiple cars. Well, it’s now official. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced that the One Car, One Fastag” policy will come into effect from April 1. Therefore, the FasTag is only valid for the vehicle that is registered to the RFID-based sticker. The registration process is quite simple and can be done either online or offline. The documents required for this process are — the vehicle owner’s passport-size photo, registration certificate of the vehicle, valid driving license and ID proof. If you already have an existing customer of the bank then it will have your KYC details otherwise you’ll have to fill up a KYC form.

FasTag on old cars

This is another common practice by many as they simply reuse the old FasTag on a new car. This is also illegal and once the scanner recognizes that the registration number of the car and the FasTag is different, you’ll be penalized by paying double the amount of the actual toll fee. As the FasTag is registered to another car, the database will send an alert to the poll plaza and you’ll be fined. Also, each FasTag is specially made for each vehicle.

Update KYC is mandatory

NHAI has declared that any incomplete Know Your Customer (KYC) will automatically be deactivated. As per the RBI guidelines, it is compulsory to update the KYC of FasTags otherwise it will get blacklisted. Now the question arises, how will you get to know if your FasTag’s KYC is incomplete? The official issuer will send an alert through an email or an SMS informing if the KYC is incomplete.
